Back to School

I am going back to school – not as a student, but to teach (again)! After 15 years away from teaching, I am so looking forward to getting back in the classroom, especially teaching a graduate level class specific to our industry.
Thanks to one of my former professors, Dr. K.H. Wang, I will be teaching in the civil & environmental engineering department at the University of Houston. The official class name is CIVE 7397 Analysis and Design of Offshore Structures. Below you will find a brief course description and information for anyone interested in taking the class.
The course starts with an overview of the different types of offshore structures and their applications and will cover the fundamentals of naval architecture, hydrodynamics and steel structural analysis for application to offshore structure design. The course material will cover the theories, methodologies and guidelines needed for the design of both bottom-mounted and floating structures, with introductions to mooring analysis and fatigue analysis. Students will be exposed to Class Society requirements for the design of mobile offshore structures (MODUs). The class will have group projects for the concept design of an offshore structure and will require the use of commercial software as well as programming by the students.
The class will meet once a week (Thursdays from 5:30pm to 8:30pm) at the UH Main campus location (i.e., off Elgin, between Calhoun and Cullen). The class is open to present civil engineering graduate students (and senior engineering students, with approval from the instructor and department head). Equally important is the fact that persons interested from the industry who hold an engineering degree can petition to take this class.
If you are interested in taking this class for credit or audit it, please contact either Dr. Wang by email (kWang@Central.UH.EDU) or Dr. Herman (Contact information below).
